In early spring, farmers in Uji, Kyoto, gently cover their tea plants with shade for several weeks before harvest. This ancient technique slows growth, boosting chlorophyll and infusing the leaves with a rich, vibrant green color - and that smooth, umami depth we love.
Only the youngest, most tender leaves are carefully handpicked. Every batch is inspected to ensure quality worthy of traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.
The leaves are quickly steamed to lock in nutrients, then dried and de-stemmed to create tencha - the pure base of matcha.
Next, they’re slowly ground in granite stone mills, a centuries-old process that takes an hour to produce just 30 grams of fine, silky powder.
The finished matcha is sealed right at the source to preserve its delicate aroma, color, and antioxidants - keeping it as fresh as the day it was milled.
We work directly with small Japanese producers to import our matcha in small batches. That means no long warehouse storage, no unnecessary middlemen - just pure, ceremonial-grade matcha shipped fresh to South Africa.

How to Make the Perfect Cup of Matcha? 🍵

Measure Your Matcha
Scoop 1 - 4 grams of Morning Rituals Matcha Powder into your favorite bowl or mug. (Try sifting your powder: This helps remove any clumps ensuring a smooth & silky finish once whisked.)
Tip: If you have a bamboo scoop (chasaku), use that for a traditional touch. But a regular teaspoon works just as well - it’s the intention that matters most.

Measure Your Matcha
Next, pour in a small amount of warm water (70°C) over the powder.
This is a crucial step - water that’s too hot can burn the matcha, making it taste bitter. Gentle heat unlocks its naturally sweet, earthy, and umami-rich flavor.
Tip: If you don’t have a thermometer, boil the water and let it cool for about a minute before using.

Whisk Until Frothy
Take your bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small handheld frother and whisk the matcha in a quick “W” or “M” motion.
This creates a light, velvety foam on top - the signature of a perfectly prepared cup. The whisking also helps fully blend the powder with the water, releasing matcha’s natural aroma and enhancing its smooth texture.

Customize Your Cup
Once you have a smooth base, it’s time to make it your own.
- For a traditional matcha tea, add a bit more hot water and whisk gently.
- For a creamy matcha latte, pour in your favorite steamed milk - oat, almond, or dairy all work beautifully.
Optional: You can also add ice for an iced matcha latte - a refreshing pick-me-up on warm days.
